2006 - Gregory H. Boyce
Gregory
H. Boyce (MNE '76) is the CEO of Peaboy Energy, effective January 1, 2006.
Greg joined Peabody in Oct. 2003 as President and Chief Operating Officer.
He has extensive U.S. and international management, operating, and engineering
experience. Under his leadership Peabody achieved record safety, productivity
and production results in 2004.
Prior to joining Peabody, Greg served as CEO-Energy for Rio Tinto, an international mining company based in London. He had responsibility for coal and uranium operations located in five countries. Prior to that, he was president and CEO of Kennecott Energy Co. During his tenure, Kennecott Energy more than tripled sales volume and grew to become the second-largest U.S. coal company. He has also served as president of Kennecott Minerals Company and exectutive assistant to the vice chairman of Standard Oil of Ohio.
Greg holds a B.S. degree in mining engineering from the UA, and the Advanced Management Program Degree from Harvard Unviersity's Graduate School of Business.
Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with $3.6 billion of revenues in 2004. Its coal products fuel more than 10% of all U.S. electricity and 3% of worldwide electricity. Peabody Energy is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BTU.
2005 - Steven C. Holmes
Steve
Holmes received his BS in Mining Engineering from the University of Arizona
in 1983 and an MBA from Western New Mexico University in 2000. Steve joined
Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1983 working on v arious mine operations and
mine planning/ engineering assignments including mine planning supervisor
and mine operations superintendent. In 1992 he became the Chief Engineer at
Morenci and in 1994 was named the Mine Manager for Chino Mines Company. In
1996 he was promoted to General Manager Operations for Chino Mines Company.
Steve worked on the integration plans for the acquisition of Cyprus-AMAX in 1999 and served as the team leader for the integration of the Sierrita operation. Steve became the general manager for Sierrita in 2000. Steve returned to Chino Mines Company in 2001 as President. Steve p rovided the leadership at Chino that resulted in a 2001 safety & health performance improvement of 64% (1.18 TRIR) and a unit cost reduction of 44% in six months. He restructured the CMC Leadership Team and successfully changed the Chino operation from company's highest cost producer to the low-cost producer in North America in 6 months. In 2002 Steve was named the Business Unit President for Phelps Dodge Mining Company. From 2003 to the present, Steve is the general manager of the mine technology group and is leading the company's effort to develop the Safford Project. The $450 MM project will require two years to construct and should be fully operational in 2008 (depending on completion schedule of the ongoing land exchange). Total employment is projected at 360 direct and ~100 contract personnel.
Steve is married to Cindy Holmes (Cindy is also a U of A alumni and the winner of the Golden A award in 1982 for women's track and field in the heptathalon) and they are the parents of four children, including one UA student (daughter Mandy is a UA cheerleader) and one Pima Community College student (Doug). Steve is also the Pacific Southwest Chair-Elect for SME and a member of the MGE Industry Leadership Board.
2004 - Thomas J. O'neil
Mr.
O'Neil, a native of Fredonia, New York, holds a B.S. in mining engineering
from Lehigh University, M.S. from Penn State, and Ph.D. from University of
Arizona. Mr. O'Neil joined Cliffs in November of 1991 as Senior Vice President-Technical
with responsibility for Cliffs' research, engineering and technical support
for business development. In November of 1994, he was named Executive Vice
President-CCI Operations and Technology with responsibility for Northshore
Mining Company in Minnesota and corporate-wide technical and related services.
In his current position, he serves as President and Chief Operating Officer
of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc and, also, as President of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron
Company and Cliffs Mining Company.
Prior to joining Cliffs in 1991, Mr. O'Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals Company and its previous owner, Amoco Minerals Company, where he served in various capacities including Vice President, Engineering and Development; Vice President/General Manager, Cyprus Sierrita Corporation, and Vice President, South Pacific Operations, stationed in Sydney, Australia.
Prior to joining Amoco, Mr. O'Neil was professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at The University of Arizona where he was a faculty member for 13 years. Mr. O'Neil is active in several professional societies including the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, where he has been a Director and Vice President-Finance. Mr. O'Neil has also been elected president of SME for the year 2003. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1999. He is also a Director and Chairman of the American Iron Ore Association; Director of the Mineral Information Institute, and a Director of the National Mining Hall of Fame.
Mr. O'Neil is married, has four grown children and resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
2002 - Jack E. Thompson, Jr., CEO Homestake Mining
Jack
E. Thompson graduated from the University of Arizona in 1971 with a B.S. degree
in mining engineering. He is a 1987 graduate of the Stanford University Executive
Program.
He began his career as a Mining Engineer with Magma Copper Company, San Manuel Division. He joined Newmont Services, Ltd. in 1975 as Chief Engineer at the Granduc Copper Mine in Canada, rising to a position of Resident Manager assigned to Dawn Mining Company, a position he held until joining Homestake Mining Company in 1981.
From May 1988 to July 1992, Mr. Thompson was President of Homestake International Minerals, Ltd., a subsidiary established in 1985 to seek investment opportunities in mineral exploration, development, and mining outside the United States. In that capacity he was responsible for operations, mine development, and acquisitions in Canada, Chile, and other mineral districts of the world. He also represented Homestake on the operating committee of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine Pty Ltd, the management company responsible for managing and operating Australia's largest gold mining and milling complex at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, which is 50% owned by Homestake.
In July 1992, Mr. Thompson was promoted to Executive Vice President, Canada, overseeing the Company's interests in Canada following the acquisition of International Corona Corporation. In August 1994, he was elected President and Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Homestake Mining Company and in May 1996 was also named Chief Executive Officer. On July 24, 1998 he was elected Chairman of the Board and held all three posts until April 1999 when a separate position, President and Chief Operating Officer was created.
2001 - Gary E. Jones
Gary
Jones was named president of WesternGeco, a joint venture between Schlumberger
and Baker Hughes in December 2000. Prior to the formation of the joint venture,
Gary served as president of Western Geophysical, and from 1997 to 1999, was
president of Baker Atlas (Western Atlas Logging Services.) Other past appointments
include vice president, business development for Western Atlas International
and vice president, Latin America for Western Geophysical. Gary joined Western
Geophysical in 1980 as a field seismologist and holds B.S. and M.Sc. degrees
in geophysics from the University of Arizona.
