The UA has several international memorandum of agreements to facilitate student and faculty exchanges. The current list of participating countries is online.

Europe

Dr. John Kemeny spent 3 months in 2004 researching rock slope characterization using LIDAR at Technical University Delft. He gave invited lectures at Potsdam, Germany, and Zurich, Switzerland. He also did field work in Spain.

We have a number of alums from Europe.

Northern Africa

Dr. Mary Poulton worked on an NSF funded project in Egypt with Dr. Hesham El-Kaliouby of the National Research Center in Cairo on developing an efficient, robust, accurate, and easy to use interpretation technique that can be used in conjunction with time-domain electromagnetic surveys for ground water and mineral exploration in southwestern Egypt.

Dr. Adel El-Fouly is a professor at Cairo University and an MGE alum. We have several alums from Mauritania.

Southern Africa

Drs. Hugh Miller, Jeff Burgess and adjunct research faculty Greg McKelvey, David Greenburg, and James Madson had an NIH Fogarty grant for mine health and safety training in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The MGE department has several alums from Zambia and Malawi.

India

Dr. John Kemeny and others held a joint research workshop in India.

We have several alums from India.

Russia

Dr. Poulton visited the Leningrad Mining Institute in 2001. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the UA and LMI at that time.

Middle East

We have alums from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE. Dr. Poulton has done research on improving drip irrigation in Israel

China

MGE Department Head, Mary Poulton, spent a month in China in spring 2004 on a research project sponsored by the Women in Science Collaboration program of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. Poulton worked with Zhengxi Yang, director of the resources engineering section, of the Department of Resources and Economics at Chengdu University of Technology in Sichuan.

We have a number of alums from China.

SE Asia

We have alums from Thailand.

Japan

We have alums from Japan and some alums working in Japan.

Indonesia/Philippines

Dr. Hugh Miller and the International Center for Mine Health, Safety, and Environment (ICMHSE) has been participating in a collaborative, multidisciplinary assessment of the engineering, environmental, and human health impacts of the 1996 adit plug failure at the Marcopper Mine on Marinduque Island, Philippines. The research was commissioned by the Philippine Government and conducted in collaboration with scientists and engineers from The Futures Group International, U.S. Geological Survey, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and Geochimica, Inc.

We have alums from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Australia

Dr. Sean Dessureault spent the summer 2004 at the CRC-Mining in Queesland Australia working on step change technology in mining operations. The MGE Department is currently negotiating to join the CRC-Mining. The UA has student/faculty exchange programs with several Australian universities including University of Western Australia, University of Sydney and an agreement is being negotiated with University of Queensland.

Northern S. America

Dr. Hugh Miller, the International Center for Mine Health, Safety, and Environment along with adjunct professor Greg McKelvey have been doing preliminary research on artisinal mining in Guiana and Brazil.

We have alums from Peru, Venezuela, Brazil.

Southern S. America

Dr. John Kemeny spent time in Chile during his 2004 sabbatical research rock fragmentation.

US

We have students from all over the US and our alums also work in nearly every state in the US.

Canada

Dr. Sean Dessureault graduated from McGill University and University of British Columbia and worked in Sudbury for Inco. The UA has an exchange agreement with UBC. Dr. Moe Momayez graduated from McGill University and was on the faculty there before coming to Arizona.

Mexico/Latin America

We have alums from Mexico.
