Scholarships

The MGE Department offers a number of scholarships to students. Some scholarships require documentation of financial need. Make sure you and your parents have filled out the most recent FAFSA . Some scholarships require specific majors, specializations, or are targeted for students from specific high schools.

The Department typically makes its scholarship decisions in late May or early June for the next academic year. Download and fill out the Department's Scholarship Application Form. Treat the biography and goals essays as what you would tell an interviewer in a job interview.

Students who want to apply for a scholarship should fill out the application form and return it to the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering by May 1 of each year.

Students from one of the 15 member states of the Western Universities Exchange Program can major in mining engineering at the University of Arizona at a greatly discounted tuition rate. For more information of the Western Universities Exchange Progrma, click here. Check the WUE website to see if your state qualifies (click on the Student Exchange link on the WICHE website).

Advising

Advising is done prior to priority registration each semester. Dr. William Davenport is the designated advisor for mining engineering majors. Please contact Dr. Davenport for an advising appointment prior to your registration dates.

Advanced standing is required to register for 300- and 400-level courses. Advanced standing requires completion of the first two years of the curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

It is important to start your junior year with all prerequisites for major courses completed. Failure to consult regularly with your advisor can cause a delay in completion of your degree requirements .

Flow charts for the curriculum are available here in PDF format, from your advisor or from the department office, Mines 229.

We are in the process of shutting down the G EN program and structuring this material as an option within the MNE program. Students that are graduating after 2010 and want an accredited degree with a concentration in Geological Engineering should consider this option. The G EN program will not be reaccredited in 2010.

Degree Check

Your advisor will let you know when you should apply for your senior degree check.

Graduation

The MGE Department hosts a pre-commencement ceremony to honor degree recipients at all levels on the Friday afternoon before commencement in the fall and spring semesters. Friends and family are encouraged to attend. Below are photos from various precommencement ceremonys:

Accreditation

The Mining and Geological Engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ( ABET ). The most recent accreditation visit was October 2004. The mining engineering program received the maximum six-year accreditation approval. Details on the outcomes assessment for programs in the College of Engineering are available. The College of Engineering will not request general accreditation for the G EN program when the next accreditation General Review comes up in 2010. The program continues to be fully accredited by ABET until that time.

The G EN curriculum is being merged into the MNE undergraduate BS degree program as an option within that program. When that merger is completed, The G EN option within the MNE degree program will be a fully accredited degree program.

Summer Internships

There are high paying, technical summer internships available for mining engineering majors. Interviews for summer jobs start as early as September for the following summer. Our students have done internships with Barrick, Phelps Dodge, Newmont, Vulcan, Granite, Kiewit, Decker Coal, Frontier-Kemper, Consol Energy, and many other companies. The jobs are all over the US and there are some foreign opportunities as well - so keep your passport current. The department notifies students of internships opportunities via the department major's listserv. In the future there will be job announcements on the website as well.
