Western Universities Exchange

Students from one of the 15 member states of the Western Universities Exchange Program can major in mining engineering at the University of Arizona at a greatly discounted tuition rate. Check the WUE website to see if your state qualifies (click on the Student Exchange link on the WICHE website).

Students in the WUE program must indicate they want to participate in the program when they apply to the University of Arizona. If accepted WUE participants pay 150% of the resident tuition rather than non-resident tuition.

Additional programs are available for eligible junior-level transfer students through The University of Arizona's branch campus, UA South.


Admissions criteria:

  1. The applicant must be a resident of a qualifying state
  2. WUE students must clearly mark on their application that they seek admission as a WUE student
  3. WUE applicants for freshman status must meet the admissions requirements of the university and the College of Engineering. Student must have no deficiencies and have one of the following: be in the top 15 percent of their class, have a 3.6 GPA , 1250 SAT (Math & Critical Reading) composite score or a 26 ACT composite score.
  4. Applicants must submit test scores, a complete application, official high school transcript, and a $65 application fee

  7. WUE applicants for transfer status must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and transferable Calculus I credit to be considered. Actual admission will be based upon the overall qualifications of the non-resident applicant pool. Applicants must meet the admissions requirements of the university and the College of Engineering.

Continuation standards:

  1. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 and be a full-time (12 hours or more per semester) student.
  2. Students may not change their state of residency while in the program.
  3. A WUE student will lose WUE eligibility if the degree program is changed to a major that is not on the WUE program list.
  4. WUE status is available for four years, or until completion of the degree program, whichever comes first.
  5. Students must fill out a WUE continuation form each semester
